Scituate Cup Rules/Schedule

Date: October 16, 2023

To: U13 and U16 Coaches

From: SYSA Re: Scituate Cup Round Robin Tournament – Rules and Format

The U13 & U16 Divisions will end their season with a round robin tournament on October 21st.

Playing Time: All players will play a minimum of 50% of each game, including the Championship game.

Games: All U13 teams will play (2) 12-minute halves (halftime: 5 minutes). All U16 teams will play (2) 15- minute halves (halftime: 5 minutes). Games will start and end with the sound of an air horn (no exceptions!) The finals will be a full game (48 minutes over 4 quarters for U13; 60 minutes over 4 quarters for U16).

Rosters: There shall be no “sharing” or “borrowing” of players, except per the below section, “Playing Down.”

Coed (U16) Teams will combine into 2 teams and play at 11v11 with each team having the same number of boys and girls on the field for both when possible. Each of the 3 round robin games will have a different combination of teams playing each other. If teams 1&2 defeat teams 3&4, both teams 1&2 get a win and both teams 3&4 get a loss towards their standings.
  • U13 Girls Teams will play 7v7.
  • U13 Boys Teams will play 6v6.

Substitutions: Substitutions may be made on all goal kicks and throw-ins, regardless of which team has possession.

Playing Down: In the event the opposing team does not have enough players to field a complete team, they may play down 1 player (play with 5 for U13 Boys, play with 6 for U13 Girls). If a team does not have this minimum number of players, the game will be a scrimmage, teams should share players, and the official result of the game will be a 3-0 win for the team that had enough players to play.

Scoring: Teams will receive 3 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. In the event of a tie at the end of the round robin portion of the tournament, standings will be determined by the following criteria:
1) least goals allowed
2) coin flip

In the Championship games ties will be resolved as follows:
● Teams tied for first place in the U13 divisions will play for 5 minutes. If the score is tied at the end of 5 minutes, teams will pull their goalie from the field and play for an additional 5 minutes. If still tied, teams will each remove one position player and play another 5 minutes. Teams will continue removing one player each and playing 5-minute periods until a winner is decided. There will be no “Golden Goal.”
● If individual teams in U16 are tied on record after 3 games, we will use the tiebreakers above to whittle down to 2 teams, then those 2 teams will use the same tiebreakers described for U13 above, but will start the game playing 7v7 with a goalkeeper.
● In both divisions, substitutions may be made between periods. Please have subs ready so substitutions can be made quickly.

Referees: The decisions of the referees are final. Questions regarding referee performance may be discussed with a Board member. Be supportive of the referees!

Please remember to demonstrate good sportsmanship. Help make this a fun experience for your players!

We hope you enjoyed the season. Thank you for your time and cooperation, SYSA
